Children

Last night I held a lovely hand,
A hand so small and sweet,

I thought my heart would burst with joy,
So wildly did it beat.

No other hand unto my heart,
Could greater pleasure bring.

Than the dear one that I held last night--
To my baby's hand I cling.

If you're going to work on it, then I'd change "neat" to "sweet" in the first stanza and correct the spelling in the last fm babie's to baby's. The easiest way to get those possessive apostrophes correct is to remember the possessive apostrophe goes directly behind who or whatever is the 'possessor.' Since the hand belongs to the baby, apostrophe behind BABY.

If there had been more than one baby who owned the hand (unlikely, huh?) then the plural babies would have been correct, with the apostrophe behind that word: babies'.

While normal people wonder about apostrophes in general, believe it or not, word nerds have heated arguments over whether to use an additional s with singular possession.

So, here's a question for you. Is it:
Lotus's house or Lotus' house?
Charles's car or Charles' car?
rickets's symptoms or rickets' symptoms?

What would you do? How do you know?

Hint: If the word already ends in a /s/ sound, the answer to the question of whether to add an apostrophe only or an apostrophe /s/ varies.

I covered the possessive in my freshman English class over the last couple of week. We're moving on next week. :)

Well, that was very helpful, Teach.
I allys ad the posterphe after a noun ending with s' to show possesion.
I made the other changes, I must of been thinking of the octuplets in the news recently.

Your comment is a dead giveaway that you are teaching in the southern states.

lol.

Lucky you to have such a simple solution!

I'm gonna start another thread instead of highjacking yours.

Than the dear one that I held last night--

I've seen this one written: "Than the precious one I held last night" which is more baby than kings and aces, I think.

I agree, it's a much sweeter sentiment with the baby's hand but then, we ain't got the winning hand either, huh? That could be pretty sweet too, doncha think?

No, it's my house, your car, and Byron can have the rickets if he wants them.
