for dolly

Spent this weekend pulling & re installing the transmission in my
boys truck. Seems there was an overlooked problem with the replacement
motor as we left an alignment bearing in the end of the crankshaft
intended for a manual transmission and not an automatic. It had to come
out for the torque converter to slide into the end of the crankshaft.
If we did this for a living, we would have known it couldn't stay. I
saw it before installing the motor and wrongly deduced it could stay.
Big mistake as it made for plenty of work once the motor was in the
truck. Had to pull the transmission and chisel the bearing out while
laying on the ground all the while transmission fluid and rain running
everywhere. We are not done hooking everything back up as it gets dark
earlier now, at 5PM instead of the 8PM we can usually depend on in the
summer months, but we are way ahead of where we were.
It is difficult and frustrating to work in these conditions but as usual,
I managed to inject a little humor to let these young men (Curtis and
Darrell) know that we can do this in spite of these circumstances. I
tell them that I once had to do almost the same thing many years ago,
that is, pull a transmission, change a cracked flywheel, and put it
back, only that time all I had for a side kick was my sister Dolly, and
she managed quite well. She was instrumental in replacing the heavy
Plymouth transmission and bolting it up to the 383 cid engine that was
in Mamma's 1969 Plymouth Fury III that we boys treated like a race
car**. Of course, transmissions seem to gain weight over the span of 29
years and there is a difference between the nimble strength of 19 and
the determined brute force of 47. Of course, I only think we get better
at not banging our knuckles, and difficulty is no longer any excuse
anymore. Some people may call it hard headed, but I call it valor.

**In 1969, Plymouth claimed to have a "completely new Fury." The four door
sedans wheelbase was 120 inches, 1.5 inches longer than in 1968, and
there was more shoulder room in both front and rear. The 383 Commando 2
barrel, or the 383 Super Commando 4 barrel (i don't remember which) and
"special cam", the transmission was a heavy 3 speed A-727 Torqueflite
automatic.

A belated thanks Dolly for your help, you should do
well dealing with your present situations, you've always been a very
present strength in time of trouble.

the key-note of my life. It is this, always to regard as mere
impertinences of fate the handicaps which were placed upon my life
almost at the beginning. I resolved that they should not crush or dwarf
my soul, but rather be made to blossom, like Aaron's rod, with flowers.

i remember when we went to buy this plymouth fury. brand new, showroom floor. us kids sneaking around to buy cigarettes fm the big machines just out of view of mama and daddy. come to think of it, maybe cigarette machines are a thing of the past now? mama was so proud of that car. and we needed it so bad after all the junkers that came before, and after.

doll always was handy working on the vehicles, as was elsie, who also worked on my jalopies in her day.

i tried my hand only once, living in NC, in the parking lot at monticello apts. i bought brake shoes, and using one of those chunky auto repair manuals, replaced them on my old car. musta been a camaro, as i recall. did a fine job, but i made my mind up then and there i was no mechanic and all the girls in the family that wanted to work on cars were welcome to it.

have changed a lot of flats since then tho, but none in recent years. these years, i limit myself to pumping gas and checking and replenishing other sundry fluids (oil, antifreeze, break fluid, transmission fluid, etc), and i'm not always too on task with those chores!

too funny, but if you keep having to taxi cab your car, you may find yourself in dire need of those skills.

heh! i was still a teenage then! i'm old and too dense to absorb the instructions in those auto repair books any more!

but you are prolly right abt the taxi cabbing. lucky me that the other mhp dropped one of the clients off on friday while i was taxi ing another on her bill paying spree. the one in the other car puked all over the back seat. yech!

Byron @ said...

running errands for clients, is that in the job description?

Lotus Dale said...

apparently. it's called "service integration" ... usually the MHSs do that, but this particular client i picked up in jonesville to bring to vidalia where we were meeting for group session and while we were this way, she wanted to stop in ferriday to pay her electricity and phone and also to go to the security finance place to take out a loan and then run to the bank to cash the loan check. bef we ever got outta jonesville, had to run her to the bank there to deposit or withdraw or who knows what.

The '69 Fury had a 2bbl carburetor.

byron,
i only read your 'transmission' letter at this moment (1:49 am). i had look at it earlier and decided to let it wait due to my pressing schedule. i read a shorter one-charles'. now i am not just floored but plastered. :) my eyes are certainly dimmed but i am glad for what my family seems to see. i am strengthened.
day after tomorrow i must sit thru surgery with dj and watch diane play the loving and pitiful wife in front of the medical staff. i will need your confidences in me that i might ward off that black cloud of bitterness. for such had kept me bound for almost 10 years.
i love all of you much.

I have assurance that you will handle this with all the poise the situation warrants.

i remember the ants but this is the first i've heard about the roaches. i guess what you dont know really doesnt hurt. :)
DJ did great. Never even asked for pain meds afterward. So dr. let him come home today! He looks absolutely great.
And, i think i did just fine also. dan, on the other hand, well, dan is just dan.:) he never spoke a word to her and probably wont for a year or 3 or 4. i dont blame him one little bitty bit either.

heather is showing her royal butt again too. michael is in the hospital with a relapse of pnuemona and, bc she got court papers to reverse custody due to her misbehavior, she is misbehaving. she wont let anyone talk to michael--just hangs up the phone. :) she is soooo stupid. we just record these short conversations and will send them to the kid's lawyer and ours.
court date is the 28th of this month. i wish everyone of you had the freedom and the finance to be there. the kids lawyer asked that, if shannon was for some reason found unfit, the kids be given to a third choice relative. and as i have said, she has already asked that the relative be dan and i.
pray some more for us all.

: Never even asked for pain meds afterward.

the other mhp came in today with a pain patch, much like nicotine patches. thought it was a cool way to administer pain meds since she sd it just lets the body absorb a little along throughout the day. the patch lasts three days. this one happens to be a light dosage of morphine but they may make them in other meds. if dj gets to suffering at any time fm any surgeries, you might ask the doc abt a patch of some variety. glad it went well this time and also sounds like things may be moving in shannon's direction with the kids which is also good esp for the kids. sorry heather is subjecting the kids to even more of her erratic meaness until court tho. the kids are the ones who suffer. she is sorry to treat her own babies like that. it is unimagineable. love to all.

Royce Reece said...

thanks for the update! And if you need more third party relatives to take care of the babies, let us know. I remember that Hillary liked lydia ann a lot :) tell uncle dan, shannon and dj I said hello and send my love!
