stupid computers

alas, the old hard drive screwup again, all data, , online bills, inaccessible.
borrowing curts, the one me and kailani was fixing in the photos.
roxios go-back and MS sys restore in a tug of war over the last month or so, no help there. hate to re-format until i check on a data recovery service somewhere.
UBD finally changed the partition info to non-dos so i cant see it, nor will winme assign it a drive letter. cmos sees it and device manager, but not me. boo-hoo.
going to try this: if its any good, i'll pass it on. ver3.0 freeware http://www.pcinspector.de/download.htm#file_recovery

sounds like it may be too late already if the partition is changed to non dos. i hope you had your stuff backed up somewhere esp the bills. sigh. these old machines are wearing out, i think.

I haven't tried it but i think theres a very good chance of recovering. win 2k has a diskmanager that may see it, especially if UBD changed it to NTFS, if not, a good recovery utility will.
i believe only the boot record is junk, and this is where the FAT is also .
if cmos installs it and device manager gives it resources, but windows thinks its a blank disk and wont assign a drive letter, it only means that windows cant read the fat, (or table of contents and location) however, that is due to windows limitations, the data is still there. take me a while with freeware or i can buy for $79 and up. maybe a good investment because i cant count the drives i've lost.
as long as they are not mechanically broken and i don't overwrite (in which case i would have to send it to a proffesional service), i want to try.
PS: no backup
